The sight of dancing couples spinning in close embrace, whether in a waltz, a polka, or a round dance, is a well-known phenomenon. Nevertheless, this genre of dance appears to have been a European "invention" that only subsequently spread to other continents.
This study group brings together ethnochoreologists and dance historians from across Europe to research the origins and spread of turning dances and dance figures. The group is under the direction of Egil Bakka, a globally distinguished dance researcher from Norway.
Our association is an official partner of the Study Group. The ambition is to make the research findings on the European Cultural Heritage Cloud, which is currently under development, widely accessible. In order to achieve this objective, the necessary funding has been requested from the EU.
