Abstract:
The article explores the life of Suzanne Douvillier, one of the New World's first celebrity ballerinas. Topics discussed include Douvillier's study of ballet at the Paris Opera, her recruitment by theater manager  Alexandre Placide who served as her tutor and manager, and her introduction to American audiences as Madame Placide. Also mentioned are her work at the Charleston French Theatre, her arrival in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1799, and her transition to set design and painting.
