Hot off the press: Pierre Dubreil

Hot off the press: Carola Finkel’s study of the life and works of Pierre Dubreil, Munich’s famous 18th-century court dancing master, has just been published as vol. 1 of the new series tanz|dokumente, issued by Dance & History e.V.: Copies can be ordered at the publisher's website, with the publisher’s order form or at your local bookstore.

The choreographies of the Munich court dancing master Pierre Dubreil are an important testimony to the dance culture of the early 18th century: In the German speaking world, the largest part of the preserved legacy of original dances can be attributed to him. Dubreil's dance sources bear witness to his great ingenuity and unique variety of forms.
Carola Finkel is the first to present a detailed and comprehensive account of the life and work of Pierre Dubreil. She provides insights into the profession of a court dancing master as well as into the dance and festival culture of the Munich court at the time of the Electors Max Emmanuel and Karl Albrecht. The biography is supplemented by a catalogue of Dubreil's dance sources with commentaries on all contredanses and danses à deux as well as reproductions of all of Dubreil's choreographies including two horse ballets.

Dr. Carola Finkel is a musicologist at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main. Her research focuses on dance and court culture of the 17th and 18th centuries as well as Nordic music history of the 19th and 20th centuries.
